Protects crew and vehicle
Batteries are found before the compactor can damage them and start a fire.
Now recruiting pilot partners
CellScan is mounted at the bin lifter of a garbage truck. While the bin is lifted, it checks the contents and warns the crew in under two seconds if a battery is inside.
The problem
Batteries keep ending up in household waste: from phones, e-cigarettes and toys, but more and more often also large batteries from e-bikes, e-scooters and power tools. Once a bin is tipped into the truck, the compactor crushes everything inside it.
These large batteries are the biggest risk. They store far more energy and burn especially fiercely when damaged.
A damaged battery can catch fire and ignite the whole load. The result is lost vehicles, damaged sorting plants and crews at risk.
How it works
CellScan fits into the normal pickup. The crew works as usual until a bin is flagged red.
The bin is hooked onto the lifter and raised as usual.
The sensor next to the lifter checks the contents without anyone stepping in.
No battery found. The bin is emptied as normal.
Battery found. The crew sets the bin aside before anything reaches the compactor.
On the truck
The CellScan unit sits on the bin lifter's gripper, exactly where the bin is hooked on. It rises with the bin and checks it from up close.
For waste management operators
Batteries are found before the compactor can damage them and start a fire.
The check runs automatically during pickup. A clear light shows green or red.
CellScan mounts on existing trucks and runs on the vehicle's power supply.
No camera and no pictures of the waste. Everything is evaluated inside the device on the truck.
Pilot program
The prototype works in the lab. Now we want to test it in real operation together with waste management operators.
We talk about your trucks, routes and expectations.
We mount CellScan on one truck and brief the crew.
CellScan runs along on a real route.
We review the results together and plan the next steps.
FAQ
No. The bin is hooked on as usual. Only when the light shows red is the bin set aside instead of emptied.
No. CellScan works without a camera and takes no pictures of what is in the bin. Everything is evaluated inside the device.
The operator decides. A common approach is to leave the bin and let the household know, so the battery can be disposed of properly.
A working prototype reliably detects lithium-ion batteries in the lab. Next come mounting it on a truck and a pilot on a real collection route.
